Maldives Wild South Island Hopping

Discover the Maldives the way few travelers ever see it. We island-hop through the untouched Huvadhoo Atoll, one of the world's largest coral reef systems, between real local communities, reef sharks, turtles, rays and some of the clearest lagoons on Earth - in a small, personal group.

What this is about

8 full days.
3 islands.
Countless adventures.

You might know the Maldives only from overwater bungalows and resort brochures. We want to show you a completely different side of this country.

We travel together across three islands in the Huvadhoo Atoll, one of the largest and most pristine coral reef atolls on Earth. Expect real island life, ethical encounters with turtles, reef sharks and rays - with manta rays and, if we're lucky, whale sharks too - and places most classic Maldives holidaymakers never get to see.

Not a bucket-list trip to tick off. A mix of adventure, slowing down, ocean vibes and real encounters - with enough time to actually enjoy them.

The trip is organised by Southdrift, a small Maldivian dive and expedition operator based in the Southern Maldives, working under strictly ethical wildlife guidelines: no feeding, no chasing, no touching. I'm joining as your Travelbuddy and content companion.

The Route

From the capital to a local island, to the quiet south

01

Malé

North Malé Atoll

Arrival, history and culture of the Maldives, and our first evening together as a group before we head south.

1 night
02

Kondey

Gaafu Alifu Atoll · North Huvadhoo

A quiet, boutique island stay right on the water. Our base for the entire trip - daily reef time, freediving sessions and our best chances of manta rays, with reef sharks and turtles pretty much guaranteed.

7 nights
03

Gemanafushi

Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll · South Huvadhoo

A smaller, calmer local island with fewer visitors. We stay based on Kondey the whole trip, so we visit Gemanafushi on day trips - jungle vibes, a beautiful house reef, and a slower pace for a few hours.

Day trips
Itinerary

Day by Day

Breakfast is included every day. Lunch and dinner on the other days are paid locally, usually together as a group. [Welcome dinner / exact meal plan: to confirm with Southdrift]

Please note: this itinerary is provisional. The exact order of activities may change on-site depending on weather, sea conditions and the group's mood - our hosts will always find the best plan for the day.

Day-by-day activities below follow Southdrift's real expedition format (reef & turtle snorkeling, whale shark and manta encounters, night snorkeling, island hopping, sandbank time, sunset cruise, local island experience, traditional fishing, freediving basics, underwater photography, beach evenings). Exact daily order is a draft - confirm final sequencing with Saneeh/Ayaka before publishing.

Where We Stay

One boutique home base, not resort chains

We deliberately don't stay in the big resorts - and we don't move around either. After one night in Malé, we're based on Kondey for the rest of the trip, in a comfortable, personal villa stay right in the middle of real island life.

Stay on Kondey

A boutique villa stay right on the water, with warm, relaxed island character. Comfortable rather than sterile, right in the middle of Kondey's island life - our base for the whole trip.

7 nights

A few more real moments from the stay - breakfast, drinks and the pool in the evening.

Day trip to Gemanafushi

We stay based on Kondey the whole time, so Gemanafushi is a boat ride away - a smaller, calmer local island we visit for a few hours on two or three days of the trip.

The Maldives are one of my absolute heart places. I keep coming back to local islands and love this authentic side of the country. On this trip, I want to show you my favourite spots, share what I've learned, and make sure you experience the Maldives just as intensely as I've come to know them.

Good to Know

Maldives Etiquette

Loose, light and beach-ready, plus a light jumper for the evenings. The Maldives is a Muslim country, so on the local islands we cover shoulders and knees. Swimwear is worn on designated bikini beaches only.

Don't forget: snorkel gear and reef-safe water shoes.

Alcohol isn't permitted on local islands like Kondey and Gemanafushi. Respecting local culture is part of the trip for us.

Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). US dollars are widely accepted in cafés and guesthouses, and cards usually work, but a bit of cash is useful for tips and small shops.

Wifi at the guesthouses is decent. Power outlets are Type G (British), sometimes Type C - bring an adapter.

No specific vaccinations required. We recommend reef-safe sunscreen, a light travel first-aid kit, and something for motion sickness on the speedboats.

We follow Southdrift's ethical guidelines for every marine encounter: no feeding, no chasing, no touching. We leave no trash, don't touch coral, and kindly speak up if we see others doing so. We're guests in this ecosystem, not the other way around.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The focus is on snorkeling, which you can do without any prior experience. The freediving workshop covers the basics, and certified divers can optionally add a trial or single dive.

This departure is capped at a maximum of 8 guests, so there's still plenty of room for personal attention, shared experiences and a relaxed atmosphere.

Yes, absolutely. Many of our guests travel solo. With a small group, you'll get to know everyone quickly and feel part of the group from day one. Rooms are shared with same-gender travel companions; a single room may be available for a surcharge, depending on availability.

Yes, this is possible - just reach out directly if you're interested in arriving earlier or staying longer.

After you apply, you'll receive all the booking information directly from Southdrift, our local tour operator. Once confirmed, a deposit is due, with the remaining balance settled a few weeks before departure.

No. You book your own international flights to and from the Maldives, so you can choose your preferred departure airport or extend your trip individually. We're happy to help you find suitable flights.

You should be a confident swimmer and enjoy being in the water. The boat excursions and snorkeling sessions are beginner-friendly - normal everyday fitness is enough.

We recommend trip cancellation/interruption insurance as well as overseas health insurance, so you're covered in case of unexpected illness or a shortened trip.

The group's safety always comes first. If a boat trip can't safely go ahead due to weather, it will be postponed or replaced with a suitable alternative where possible. The Maldives is a natural paradise, and that's exactly what makes every trip unique.

International flights, lunch and dinner, drinks, optional activities, personal expenses and insurance are not included.

This might be the start of your most beautiful Maldives trip.

If you want to do more than just see the Maldives - if you want to really experience them - I'd love to travel there with you. Spots in our small group are limited.
